Beijing on Friday announced that it will require export permits for some graphite products to protect national security. Under the new rule, Chinese graphite exporters must obtain permits as of Dec. 1 to ship two types of graphite, including high-purity, high-hardness and high-intensity synthetic graphite material, and natural flake graphite and its byproducts. The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said in a statement on Friday that it has concluded Apple and Google have breached the country’s telecommunications act by forcing app developers to use their payment systems at App Store and Google Play Store and unfairly delaying app reviews in an apparent abuse of their market dominance. Upon its finding, the Korean communications regulator on the same day notified Google and Apple of corrective action and warned of their combined fine of up to 68 billion won -47.5 billion won for Google and 20.5 billion won for Apple, which will be finalized after KCC hears out the companies’ response to its decision and other review processes, it said. Japan’s investments in startups surged to an all-time high of 877.4 billion yen, up 58% from 2020. The government also actively supports startups. The country plans to prop up companies in the next-generation semiconductor, Web 3.0 and healthcare sectors while helping research and development in the bio and aerospace industries in 2024. Japanese companies are seeking cooperation with South Korean startups to expand their businesses in the global market, said Kim Hyun Jong, head of the Korea Techno-Venture Foundation’s Tokyo office. “The country is mainly helping Japanese companies with great material technology and Korean companies with global marketing strength make inroads into the Chinese and Southeast Asian markets,” Kim said. The AI-driven growth in high bandwidth memory (HBM) chip demand has created a new memory market for high value-added, customized DRAM chips, including processing-in-memory (PIM), compute express link (CXL) and double data rate 5 (DDR5), according to industry experts. “We start discussing a (chip development) roadmap about two to three years in advance,” said Park Myung-soo, head of DRAM marketing at SK Hynix. LG Uplus Corp.’ platform push is gaining traction with active venture funding. LG is beefing up investments in startups to hunt for new drivers that can accelerate its push to transition into a platform company. LG Uplus early this month invested 3 billion won ($2.3 million) in Vetching, the developer of the electronic medical record (EMR) and customer relationship management (CRM) solution Plusvet for veterinarians, according to venture capital industry sources on Monday. Plusvet enables veterinarians to digitally manage appointments, consultations and payments, as well as medicine orders and management. It is Korea’s only cloud-based EMR for veterinarians. South Korean electric vehicle battery majors’ plan to run more than 10 EV battery manufacturing plants in the US may hit a snag due to the looming union risk in the world’s third-largest EV market after Ultium Cells LLC’s agreement to hike wages by more than 20%. Ultium and the United Auto Workers(UAW) have tentatively agreed to give raises of about 25% to workers at the battery manufacturing plant in Warren, Ohio, the US largest auto labor union announced on Thursday. Ultium is an EV battery-making joint venture set up by South Korea’s largest EV battery maker LG Energy Solution Ltd. and US auto major General Motors Co. in the US.
