[영어 이야기] 노력으로 성과를 얻을 때 표현은 carve out

carve out은 딱딱한 물건을 칼로 파내거나 도려내는 걸 말합니다.
기업뉴스에서 carve-out이란 용어를 가끔 만납니다.
주로 대기업이 일부 사업부를 떼어내 다른 기업에 팔거나 지분 일부를 넘기는 것을 말합니다.

Artificial intelligence(AI)-driven translation has been dominated by big tech. Alphabet Inc.’s Google LLC is the global leader while Naver Corp. is the dominant player in South Korea based on Naver Papago, a multilingual machine translation cloud service. These services translate everything from research materials to day-to-day conversations.

But that doesn't prevent startups from carving out a place of their own in the machine translation industry. They can often tackle business verticals, niche marketplaces where suppliers serve a specific business audience in a specialized industry, better than conglomerates.

One such firm is Flitto. With the food and beverage industry on its radar, the startup recently introduced a QR code-based multilingual menu translation service. The service works on restaurant menus and brochures at tourist information centers. It is compatible with QR codes available at major shopping malls such as The Hyundai Seoul in English, Chinese and Japanese.

인공지능(AI) 번역 분야는 초대형 테크 기업들이 지배하고 있다. 글로벌 시장에서는 구글, 국내에서는 네이버(파파고)가 각각 탄탄한 입지를 구축하고 있다. 이들은 자료 조사, 외국인과의 대화 등 일상적인 번역까지 해결해준다.

그렇다고 컴퓨터 번역산업에서 스타트업이 설 땅이 없는 것은 아니다. 빅테크가 해결하기 어려운 버티컬(전문) 영역은 스타트업이 능력을 발휘할 수 있는 곳이다.

플리토가 이런 기업이다. 이 회사는 식음료 사업자들을 위해 QR코드 기반의 메뉴판 번역 서비스를 선보였다.

식당의 음식 메뉴판이나 관광센터의 안내 책자 등을 번역해주는 기능이다.

더현대 서울 같은 대형 쇼핑몰에서도 QR코드를 이용해 영어, 중국어, 일본어로 번역문을 제공한다. 해설틈새 번역시장을 개척하고 있는 스타트업들의 활약을 전하는 기사의 일부입니다. 오늘 살펴볼 표현은 carve out입니다.

carve는 cut처럼 잘라낸다는 뜻입니다. 다만 두 단어엔 약간 차이가 있습니다. 가령 통나무가 있다면 cut은 단순히 통나무를 두 동강으로 자른다는 뜻이지만 carve를 쓰면 도려낸다는 의미가 있습니다. 조각품을 깎는 것도 carve라고 하지요.

따라서 carve out은 딱딱한 물건을 칼로 파내거나 도려내는 걸 말합니다. You have to carve out the avocado and dispose of the seed first(우선 아보카도를 잘라내고 씨부터 제거하세요).

여기서 비유적으로 사용하면 자신의 영역을 개척하거나 노력을 통해 성과를 얻어낸다는 뜻으로 쓰입니다. carve out a niche(자신에게 딱 맞는 역할이나 일자리를 얻어내다)라는 표현도 씁니다.

예문에서는 carving out a place of their own이라고 해서 스타트업들이 각자의 틈새시장을

개척하고 있다는 의미로 쓰였습니다.
