전치사 접속사 구분은 문장전체를 보아야 해요

♣전치사 뒤에는 명사가,접속사 뒤에는 [주어+동사]가 원칙이다.

전치사로 쓰이는 어휘들이 접속사로도 쓰이는 경우가 있다.따라서 전치사와 접속사의 구분은 단순히 어휘만 가지고는 하기 힘들고 문장 전체를 보아야 알 수 있는 경우가 많다.하지만,다음의 네 어휘는 각각 전치사와 접속사로만 쓰이는 대표적인 단어들이라는 사실에 유념하자.

1. (al)though / despite (in spite of)

(al)though는 접속사로만 쓰이는 반면 despite는 오직 전치사로만 쓰인다.따라서 despite 뒤에 절이 나오는 문장은 성립할 수 없다.

Although she was in poor health, she continued to carry out her duties.

Despite all our efforts to save the school, the authorities decided to close it.

2. while / during

while은 접속사로, during은 전치사로 쓰인다.

While he was asleep, thieves broke in.

During the summer she worked as a lifeguard.

<참고> because와 because of 역시 알아두어야 하는데, because는 접속사로 쓰이지만 뒤에 전치사 of가 붙으면 전치사구가 되어 뒤쪽에 명사가 와야 한다.

I love you because you first loved me.

I can live because of your love.

♣의미상 혼동하기 쉬운 전치사에 주의하라

1. between / among

이 둘은 한국어로는 모두 '~사이에'라는 뜻이지만, between은 둘 사이일 경우에 쓰이고 among은 셋 이상일 경우에 쓰인다.

Are there any public holidays between Christmas and Easter？

The girl quickly disappeared among the crowd.

2. by / until

학생들이 많이 혼동해 하는 것이 by와 until이다. 그 뜻은 모두 '~까지'이지만 서로 다른 용도로 사용된다. by는 기간의 완료를 나타낼 때 쓰이고, until은 기간의 지속성을 나타낼 때 쓰인다. 다음의 예를 보면 쉽게 이해가 될 것이다.

A. You must wait here until seven.

B. You must come here by seven.

A 문장에서 until이 쓰인 이유는 wait라는 행위를 7시까지 계속해야 하기 때문이다.반면, B 문장에서 by가 쓰인 이유는 7시까지 계속 come이라는 행위를 하는 것이 아니라 7시까지 완료하기만 하면 되기 때문이다.

The documents need to be ready by next Friday.

Until recently, Anna worked as a teacher in Japan.
