완전부정과 부분부정의 차이에 주의하세요

♣부정적인 표현을 나타내는 부사들의 어법에 주의하라

◈한국어와 달리 영어는 이중 부정，혹은 중복 부정을 일반적으로 사용하지 않는다.

예를 들어 한국어에는 '~하지 않을 수 없다'와 같이 '않을'과 '없다'의 두 가지의 부정 표현을 동시에 사용할 수 있지만 영어에는 그런 표현을 쓰지 않는다.

다시 말해서，scarcely，hardly，seldom，rarely 등의 부정의 의미를 포함하는 부사는 no，not，never，without 등의 부정어와 나란히 쓰일 수 없다.

1.Reaching the top of the mountain，we had hardly any energy left for the decent.

이 문장 자체로 이미 '우리는 하산할 힘이 거의 남지 않았다'는 부정의 뜻이므로 "we didn't have hardly any ~"와 같이 쓰면 이중부정으로 틀린다

2.Now that I have a baby， I seldom get the chance to go on a trip.

"I never seldom ~" seldom이 이미 부정의 의미를 가지고 있으므로 never와 같이 사용하지 않는다.

◈부분 부정，다시 말해서 not과 같은 부정적인 표현+전체 개념어(all，every，necessarily，altogether，entirely 등)로 연결된 문장을 완전 부정으로 착각하면 안 된다.

아래의 예문을 보며 확실히 이해해 두자.

1.All is not gold that glitters.

반짝이는 것이 모두 금은 아니다.

2.It is not in everyone's power to secure wealth，office，or honors.

부나 지위，명예를 지키는 것이 누구나 할 수 있는 일은 아니다.

3.The greatest minds do not necessarily ripen the quickest.

위대한 사람이 반드시 일찍 알려지는 것은 아니다.

4.He is not altogether a fool.

그는 완전히 바보는 아니다.

5.You are not entirely free from the crime.

당신은 그 죄로부터 완전히 자유롭지는 못하다.

Strange E-mails Without Attachments Are Not Necessarily Harmless

The perception still exists that e-mails without attachments are harmless and that it is safe to open them．

But it is much safer to view the source of the e-mail without opening it．

This is not always possible with web based e-mail services but it is possible with e-mail services like Outlook Express．

그러나 메일을 열지 않은 채로 메일의 출처를 보는 것이 훨씬 더 안전하다．

이것은 웹 기반 이메일 서비스에 있어서 항상 가능한 것은 아니지만 Outlook과 같은 종류의 서비스에서는 가능하다．
