♣ 주주어가 동사 뒤로 가는 구문의 일치에 주의하자.

일반적인 영어 문장의 순서는 '주어+동사'이지만,주어가 동사 뒤에 나오는 특별한 경우가 있다. 이런 도치구문들에 있어서도 역시 주어와 동사의 일치를 주의 깊게 살펴보아야 한다. 대표적으로 다음의 경우를 꼭 기억해 두자.

1. 'There + 동사 + 주어' 문장에서의 수일치

2. 부사구가 문두에 나오는 경우

3. 부정어구가 문두에 나오는 경우


1. There have been some changes around here.

♣ number of + 명사의 일치를 구분하자.

많이 혼동해 하는 a number of와 the number of에 대해서는 이것 한 가지만 기억하면 된다. 'a number of'는 many와 같다고 생각하면 된다. 다시 말해서 a number of의 주어는 of 뒤의 복수명사가 되는 것이므로 당연히 복수명사에 맞는 동사가 와야 한다. 반면,the number of에 있어서 주어는 number다. 따라서 단수인 number에 맞는 단수동사가 와야 하는 것이다.

1. The number of foreigners has increased dramatically over the past few years.

2. A number of Australians have concluded that time is much more important than money.

International Space Station astronauts pulled an alarm, wore protective gear and managed to evade after smelling a foul odor that turned out to be a vapor leaking from an oxygen vent, NASA said．

"Things are calming down," NASA spokesman Kelly Davison said．

The crew wore surgical gloves and masks but at no time did they have to put on a gas mask or oxygen mask, said Mike Macmaster, NASA‘s space station program supervisor．

The crew at first reported smoke, but it turned out to be a visible potassuim hydroxide, which was leaking from an oxygen vent, Macmaster said of the incident．

He added that in some cases such a leaking gas could generate big troubles．

The space Station is on various missions, including searching for possible signals from extraterrestrial beings．
