"변화, 우리는 믿을 수 있습니다"

지난 30회에 이어 미국 대통령 선거 민주당 경선후보인 버락 오바마의 사우스 캐롤라이나 경선 승리 연설 뒷부분 중 일부를 살펴보도록 하자.

We are up against the belief that it’s ok for lobbyists to dominate our government － that they are just part of the system in Washington.

But we know that the undue influence of lobbyists is part of the problem，and this election is our chance tosaythatwe’renotgoing to let them stand in our way any more.

We are up against the conventional thinking that says your ability to lead as President comes from longevity in Washington or proximity to the White House.

But we know that real leadership is about candor，and judgment，and the ability to rally Americans from all walks of life around a common purpose － a higher purpose.

We are up against the idea that it’s acceptable to say anything and do anything to win an election.

We know that this is exactly what’s wrong with our politics : this is why people don’t believe what their leaders say anymore : this is why they tune out.

And this election is our chance to give the American people a reason to believe again.

And what we’ve seen in these last weeks is that we’re also up against forces that feed the habits that prevent us from being who we want to be as a nation.

It’s the politics that uses religion as a wedge，and patriotism as a bludgeon.

A politics that tells us that we have to think，act，and even vote within the confines of the categories that supposedly define us.

The assumption that young people are apathetic.

The assumption that the wealthy care nothing for the poor，and that the poor don’t vote.

The assumption that African－Americans can’t support the white candidate : whites can’t support the African－American candidate : blacks and Latinos can’t come together.

But we are here tonight to say that this is not the America we believe in.

I did not travel around this state over the last year and see a white South Carolina or a black South Carolina.

I saw South Carolina.

I saw crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children.

I saw shuttered mills and homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from all walks of life，and men and women of every color and creed who serve together，and fight together，and bleed together under the same proud flag.

I saw what America is，and I believe in what this country can be.

That is the country I see.

That is the country you see.

But now it is up to us to help the entire nation embrace this vision.

Because in the end，we are not just up against the ingrained and destructive habits of Washington，we are also struggling against our own doubts，our own fears，and our own cynicism.

The change we seek has always required great struggle and sacrifice.

And so this is a battle in our own hearts and minds about what kind of country we want and how hard we’re willing to work for it.

우리는 로비스트들이 우리의 정부를 지배한다 해도 그것은 단지 워싱턴 정가에서 의례히 행해지던 관례이므로 신경쓸 것 없다고 믿어버리는 문제에 직면하고 있습니다.

하지만 우리는 로비스트들의 부당한 영향력이 문제의 일부라는 사실을 알고 있습니다.

이번 선거는 그들이 더 이상 우리의 길을 막지 못하도록 하겠다는 우리의 의지를 밝힐 기회입니다.

우리는 대통령으로서의 국가를 이끌어나가는 능력은 오랜 정치 경험과 백악관과의 근접성에서 나온다는 사람들의 관습적인 생각을 당면하고 있습니다.

하지만 우리는 참된 리더십은 성실과 판단력，그리고 각계각층의 미국인들을 한 가지 공통된 목표，보다 높은 목표로 결집시킬 수 있는 능력에 달려 있다는 사실을 알고 있습니다.

우리는 선거에서 이기기 위해서라면 무엇을 말하고 무엇을 행동한다 해도 다 용납된다고 생각하는 문제에 맞닥뜨려 있습니다.

우리는 이것이 바로 우리의 정치에 있어서 잘못된 점이라는 사실을 알고 있습니다.

이것이 국민들이 그들의 지도자가 하는 말을 더 이상 믿지 않는 이유이고，이것이 국민들이 정치를 외면하는 이유입니다.

이번 선거는 미국 국민들에게 다시금 신뢰할 수 있는 근거를 가져다 줄 절호의 기회입니다.

우리가 지난 몇 주를 통해서 알게 된 것은 우리는 또한 우리가 원하는 국민이 되지 못하도록 우리를 막는 구습을 키우는 세력에 직면하고 있다는 것입니다.

그 세력은 바로 종교를 쐐기로, 애국주의를 몽둥이로 이용하는 정치권입니다.

그 세력은 바로 일정한 영역의 범주 내에서만 우리가 생각해야 하고 행동해야 하고 심지어 투표해야 한다고 우리에게 말하는 정치세력입니다.

젊은이들은 정치에 무관심하다는 가정이 바로 그것입니다.

부자들은 가난한 사람들을 전혀 신경 쓰지 않으며 가난한 사람들은 투표를 하지 않는다는 가정이 그것입니다.

흑인들이 백인 후보를 지지할 수 없으며, 백인들도 흑인 후보를 지지하지 않는다는 가정이 그것이며, 흑인과 라티노들이 함께 할 수 없다는 가정이 바로 그와 같은 구습적인 것들입니다.

그러나 우리는 오늘 밤 우리가 믿는 미국은 그러한 모습이 아니라는 사실을 말하기 위해 이곳에 모였습니다.

제가 지난 해에 이 주를 돌아다니며 본 것은 백인의 사우스 캐롤라이나도 아니며, 흑인의 사우스 캐롤라이나도 아닙니다.

제가 본 것은 사우스 캐롤라이나입니다.

저는 흑인 아이들과 백인 아이들의 미래를 빼앗아 가고 있는 무너져가는 학교들을 보았습니다.

저는 한때 각계각층의 미국인들이 소유하고 있었던 폐쇄된 공장들과 팔려고 내놓은 집들을 보았습니다.

그러한 자산들은 하나의 자랑스러운 깃발 아래서 함께 복무하고，싸우고，피 흘린，모든 다른 피부색과 신조를 지닌 사람들의 것이었습니다.

저는 현재의 미국의 모습을 보았으며 이 나라가 될 수 있는 모습을 믿습니다.

그것이 바로 제가 바라보는 나라입니다.

그것이 바로 여러분들이 바라보는 나라입니다.

그렇지만 현재 전 국가가 이러한 비전을 포용하도록 돕는 것은 우리에게 달려 있는 일입니다.

왜냐하면 우리는 단지 워싱턴 정가에 깊이 물들어 있는 파괴적인 구습들에 직면해 있을 뿐만 아니라 우리 자신의 의심과 두려움，그리고 냉소주의에 대항하고 있기 때문입니다.

우리가 추구하는 변화는 항상 큰 노력과 희생을 요구해 왔습니다.

그래서 이것은 우리가 어떠한 나라를 원하며 그것을 이루기 위해 우리가 얼마나 열심히 노력할 것인지에 관한，우리 자신의 마음과 정신에 내재되어 있는 싸움입니다.
