♣중요 동사 정리

우리에게 너무도 친숙한 동사들이지만 막상 그 동사를 활용하여 문장을 만들거나 말을 하려고 하면 어떻게 쓰는 것이 맞는 것인지 확신이 없는 경우가 많다.

이렇게 확신이 없는 이유는 동사들의 정확한 용도와 쓰임새에 대해서 잘 모르거나 어렴풋이 알기 때문이다.

영어를 구사하는 데 있어서 모호하게 아는 것은 거의 도움이 되지 않는다.

모호하게 100개를 아는 것보다 확실하게 10개를 아는 사람이 영어를 더 잘하는 사람이다.

오늘은 바로 우리가 어렴풋이 알고 있는 대표적인 동사들의 쓰임에 관하여 정리를 하고자 한다.

한 시간만 시간을 투자하면 충분히 나의 것으로 만들 수 있는 분량이며，또한 나의 것으로 만들기만 하면 매우 유용한 내용이니 철저한 학습을 당부한다.

◆ want, wish, hope

이들 세 동사는 비슷한 뜻을 가지지만 용법이 조금씩 다르다.

1.want

①want + 명사(구)

A recent survey has found that shoppers want more time for themselves.

②want + to 부정사

I want to submit my new application tomorrow.

③want + 목적어 + 목적보어

I didn't know my mother wanted the laundry done today.

2.wish

①wish + for + 명사(구)

She wished for peace with her whole heart.

②wish (+목적어) + to 부정사

I wish to be left alone.

He was not sure whether he wished her to stay longer.

③wish + somebody + something

I wish you all the happiness and joy that life can bring.

④wish (that) + 주어 + 동사

I wish that Kathy could hear this cheer,too.

3.hope

①hope + for + 명사(구)

We are hoping for good weather on Sunday.

②hope + to 부정사

She hopes to learn to read,so that she can study a handbook on cooking.

③hope (that) + 주어 + 동사

I hope that you will pass the exam.

◆ need, want, deserve

이 동사들은 뒤에 to be p.p가 올 경우 －ing로 대체가 가능하다.

①That boy needs to be washed. ＝ That boy needs washing.

②The windows wanted to be cleaned. ＝ The windows wanted cleaning.

③He deserves to be locked up for what he did.

＝ He deserves locking up for what he did.

◆ It takes (+ for somebody) + [시간，노력，돈…] + to 부정사

Sometimes it may take a lifetime to make the world around you change.

◆ expect

①expect + 명사(구)

Among the banners and signs, one would normally expect a lot of singing, chanting and cheering.

②expect + to 부정사

We can hardly expect to learn without making a good many mistakes in the process.

③expect + 목적어 + to 부정사

We can't expect everyone to bike to work or school.

He was once expected to be a good singer.

④expect that + 주어 + 동사

Expecting that a blanket will always make something warm, they think that it must warm ice, too.
