부정사ㆍ동명사ㆍ분사 등으로 동사처럼 쓰여!!

♣ 준동사도 동사다

준동사는 말 그대로 '동사에 준한다'는 뜻으로 그 어법이 동사에 준하여 활용된다는 뜻이다.

이러한 준동사에는 부정사,동명사,분사 등이 있으며 이들은 문장에서 명사,형용사,부사 등 다양하게 쓰이지만 기본적으로 다음과 같은 5가지 동사적 속성을 지닌다.

1.의미상 주어가 필요하다

ex)It is very cruel of you to abuse animals like that.

I deeply appreciate your doing me a favor.

문장의 주어가 준동사의 행위자, 즉 준동사의 의미상의 주어와 일치하는 경우 별도로 주어를 명시할 필요가 없지만 문장 주어와 준동사의 의미상의 주어가 일치하지 않을 경우 반드시 준동사의 주어를 명시해야 한다.

2.문장의 동사보다 먼저 발생한 동작이나 상태는 완료형으로 나타낸다

(to have p.p./having p.p.)

ex)He seems to have told a lie.

My father having left a lot of money behind,we didn't need to work anymore.

3.타동사가 준동사로 쓰인 경우 전치사 없이 목적어를 수반한다

ex)There is no reason to doubt his motives.

Before picking up the receiver,she took a few deep breaths to calm her down.

많은 학생들이 명사와 동명사의 정확한 차이점을 이해하지 못하는 것 같다.

명사는 명사의 역할만을 하지만, 동명사는 '명사 역할을 하는 동사'이므로 동사의 역할이 우선시된다.

동사 remember의 명사와 동명사인 remembrance와 remembering을 예로 들어 보자.명사인 remembrance는 그 자체로 문장에서 주어, 목적어, 보어로 쓰이는 등 명사의 역할을 하지만 동명사 remembering은 타동사인 remember의 준동사이므로 반드시 목적어가 필요하다.

ex)Remembrance will be very important for your life.

Remembering me will be very important for your life.

☞주의:자동사가 준동사로 쓰인 경우는 당연히 목적어가 필요 없다.

Sleeping at least seven hours a day is essential for your health.

4.준동사에도 능동 및 수동의 개념이 필요하다(to be p.p./being p.p.)

ex)The books to be refunded are on the table.

We managed to escape the fire without being injured.

5.준동사도 부사의 수식을 받는다

ex)After desperately looking for help, I met the right person.

To truly appreciate this film, you need to understand the background.
