'used to' 'be(=get) used to' 잘 구별해서 써야지!

1. 'used to'와 'be(＝get) used to'의 의미와 용법을 확실히 구분해야 한다.

먼저 두 조동사 중 'used to'는 '~하곤 했다'는 의미로 과거의 습관을 나타낸다.

반면에 'be(＝get) used to'는 '~에 익숙하다'는 의미를 갖는다.

또 한 가지 주의할 것은 to 이하의 형태에 있다. 과거의 습관을 나타내는 'used to'에서 to는 전치사가 아닌 부정사의 to이므로 뒤에 동사 원형이 와야 하는데 반해, 'be used to'에서 'to'는 전치사로 쓰였기 때문에 뒤에는 반드시 명사 혹은 동명사가 와야 한다.

We used to practice tennis together after class.

(우리는 방과 후에 테니스 연습을 하곤 했다.)

Koreans are not used to tipping.

(한국인은 팁을 주는 것에 익숙하지 않다.)



2. 조동사의 관용 표현들을 확실히 정리해 두자.

①cannot help + ing

=cannot but + 동사 원형 ~하지 않을 수 없다

=have no choice but to + 동사원형

②cannot ~ too : 아무리 ~해도 지나치지 않다

③cannot A and B: A와 B를 동시에 할 수는 없다

④may well + 동사 원형: 어쩌면 ~일지 모른다(추측)， ~하는 것이 당연하다(허락)

⑤may as well +동사 원형: ~ 하는 편이 낫다
