'I wish' 'as if' 'as though'도 가정법

1. 'I wish' 가정법

'I wish' 가정법 역시 지난 회에 살펴본 'If 가정법'과 구조가 같다.

다시 말해서 소망하는 시점과 소망 내용의 시점이 일치하면 가정법 과거를,소망하는 시점보다 소망 내용의 시점이 한 단계 과거이면 가정법 과거 완료를 쓴다.

I wish I were rich enough to buy it.

(내가 그것을 살 수 있을 정도로 충분히 부자라면 얼마나 좋을까.)

I wish I had been rich enough to buy it.

(내가 그것을 살 수 있을 정도로 충분히 부자였다면 얼마나 좋을까.)

2. as if / as though 가정법

'마치 ~인 것처럼'의 의미를 지닌 'as if' 가정법의 문장의 구조 역시 'I wish' 가정법과 동일하다.

'as if' 앞뒤 동작의 시점이 일치하면 가정법 과거를, 'as if' 뒤에 오는 동작의 시점이 먼저이면 가정법 과거 완료를 쓴다.

You sound as if you were my mother.

(너는 마치 내 어머니처럼 말을 한다.)

You sounded as if you were my mother.

(너는 마치 내 어머니처럼 말을 했다.)

You look as if you had seen a ghost.

(너는 마치 귀신이라도 봤던 것처럼 보인다.)

You looked as if you had seen a ghost.

(너는 마치 귀신이라도 봤던 것처럼 보였다.)

3. 당위성이 있는 that 절에서는 '주어+(should)+동사원형'을 쓴다

'~을 해야만 한다'는 당위성을 제시하는 that절에서 should를 쓰는 경우 이 should는 생략 가능하며,이 경우 동사는 원형으로 남게 된다.

I suggested that the matter (should) be dropped.

(나는 그 문제에 대한 논의를 중단해야 한다고 제안했다.)

We insisted that something (should) be done immediately.

(우리는 즉시 무언가가 행해져야 한다고 요구했다.)

We appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our head." The South American leader accused Washington of "exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world."

[해석] 베네수엘라 대통령 UN의 개혁을 제안하다

베네수엘라 대통령인 Hugo Chavez는 어제 UN 총회 회의장에서 발언을 통하여 미국 대통령인 George W. Bush를 "악마"로 묘사하며 미국과 설전을 벌였다.

Chavez는 "악마가 어제 여기 왔었다.

그는 이곳에서 마치 자기가 세상의 주인인 것처럼 말하였다.

우리는 미국과 전 세계 국민들에게,마치 우리 머리 위에 칼이 매달려 있는 것과 같은 이 위협을 중단할 것을 호소한다"고 말하였다.

그 남미 지도자는 미국을 "전 세계 국민들에 대한 착취와 강탈"의 주범이라고 비난하였다.
