sellㆍchange 등은 의미상 수동형 동사를

* 수동의 뜻을 가지는 동사에 주의하라

sell(팔리다),change(바뀌다) 등과 같이 능동형으로 쓰였음에도 불구하고 의미상 수동을 나타내는 동사들이 있다.

이 경우 본래 수동의 의미를 갖는 동사들이므로 다시 수동형 문장을 만들 수 없다.

수동의 의미를 갖는 다음의 대표적인 동사들은 꼭 익혀두도록 하자.

This historical adventure novel sold half a million copies.

I went to the beach last weekend, and now my back is peeling.

The museum does not open until 10 a.m. on Sundays.

The door closed right before my eyes.

The wind suddenly changed from south to north.

* that절이 목적어인 문장의 수동태에 주의하라

'일반인 주어 + [believe, consider, estimate, expect, know, report, say, think 등의 동사] + that 주어 + 동사'의 수동태는 'It + be + p.p. + that 주어 +동사',혹은 '주어 + be + p.p. + to 부정사'로 변형되며,이때 수와 시제 일치에 주의해야 한다.

다음 A,B 두 문장의 문장 전환을 살펴보자.

A : People say that just three trees can save an average household $100 in cooling energy costs annually.

→ ① It is said that just three trees can save an average household $100 in cooling energy costs annually.

→ ② Just three trees are said to save an average household $100 in cooling energy costs annually.

(단지 나무 세 그루면 일반 가정에 냉방 에너지 비용으로 연간 100달러 정도를 절약할 수 있다고 한다.)

B : We know that his wife often scolded Socrates because he did nothing to make money.

→ ① It is known that his wife often scolded Socrates because he did nothing to make money.

→ ② His wife is known to have often scolded Socrates because he did nothing to make money.

(소크라테스가 돈벌이를 전혀 하지 않았다는 이유로,그의 아내가 그를 비난했다고 알려져 있다.)

A의 경우 주절의 동사인 'say'와 that절의 동사 'can save' 모두 현재 시제로 시제가 일치한다.

그러므로 that절의 주어를 문두로 하여 문장을 변환할 때,단순부정사(to + 동사원형) 형태인 'to save'가 오게 된다.

그러나 B의 경우,주절의 동사 'know'는 현재 시제인데 반해,that절의 동사 'scolded'는 주절보다 한 시제 먼저인 과거형이다. 그러므로 that절의 주어를 문두로 하여 문장을 전환할 경우 이러한 시간차를 밝히기 위해 완료부정사(to have p.p.)인 'to have scolded'가 오게 되는 것이다.
