이번 호에서는 구체적인 Reading Skill을 소개하려 한다.


우리가 흔히 생활하면서 대하는 전화번호부,TV프로그램 같은 표를 볼 때는 아무도 처음부터 끝까지 읽지 않는다.


자기에게 필요한 것만 빨리 찾아보고는 덮어 버린다.


이렇게 필요한 정보만 찾아 읽을 때 사용하는 Reading Skill이 scanning이다.


scanning을 활용하는 글감은 앞에서 예를 든 것 같은 실용문이다.


그러나 전화번호부나 TV프로그램 편성표는 찾고자 하는 항목과 프로그램만 정하면 알파벳순 혹은 채널순으로 찾으면 되니 여러분이 주변에서 찾아서 연습해 보기로 하고,이 지면에서는 좀더 복합적인 내용을 담고 있는 글을 다루어 보겠다.


주어진 글에 대한 지시문을 읽고,아래 지시 사항에 따라 이번 호의 글을 분석해 보라.

■ 지시사항

Directions: 다음은 Linguistic Imperialism을 다룬 책을 소개하는 글이다.


제시문을 기초로 하여 Linguistic Imperialism의 개념과 The Trojan Horse가 내포하는 의미를 설명하시오.

The global influence of the English language may be linked to linguistic imperialism, in particular, where English becomes dominant at the expense of indigenous languages.


The English language is spread through the powerful influence of education, politics, economics, science and technology, culture and the media.


Linguistic imperialism can occur when English becomes a gatekeeper to education, employment, business opportunities and popular culture and where indigenous languages are marginalised.


Pennycook (1995; 2001) is suspicious that the spread of English is beneficial; in many cases the language is appropriated and changed by different cultures.


Cooke (1988) uses the metaphor of the Trojan horse to describe the way that English may be welcomed initially in a country but then cause concern as it dominates the native language(s) and cultures.


The rise (and acceptance) of World Englishes illustrates how English can be appropriated by its learners.


The emergence of World Englishes and other new forms has implications for language acquisition and language teaching.


These pedagogic implications are discussed with six clear suggestions for language teaching in the ESL classroom.

그렇게 미리 찾고자 하는 정보를 염두에 두고 필요한 부분만 찾아 집중적으로 읽는 것이 scanning인 것이다.
