[Reading Skills] 4.

◆ stem cell(줄기세포)

South Korean scientists have made stem cells tailored to match the individual for the first time.(한국 과학자들은 최초로 개인에게 적합하게 맞춰진 줄기세포를 만들어 냈다.)

◆ egg(난자)

by taking genetic material from the patient and putting it into a donated egg(환자로부터 유전물질을 채취해 이를 기증된 난자에 이식시킴으로써)

◆ organ transplant(장기이식),rejection(거부반응)

The resultant cells were a perfect match for the individual and could mean treatments for diseases like diabetes without problems of rejection.(그 결과로 얻어진 세포들은 환자 개인에게 완벽하게 일치해 거부반응 없이 당뇨병과 같은 질병 치유가 가능할 수 있게 됐다.)

◆ clone(복제하다),embryo(배아)

Meanwhile,UK scientists at Newcastle University announced they had successfully produced a cloned embryo using donated eggs and genetic material from stem cells.(한편 뉴캐슬 대학교의 영국 과학자들은 기증받은 난자와 줄기세포로부터 얻어낸 유전물질을 이용해 복제된 배아를 만들어내는 데 성공했다고 발표했다.)

◆ manipulate(조작하다,처리하다)

In some cases, the cells might need to be manipulated before being used as a treatment.(어떤 경우에는 그 세포들이 치료용으로 사용되기 전에 조작이 필요 할 수도 있다.)

◆ enzyme(효소)

Currently, scientists use animal enzymes to isolate the cells needed for such research.(현재,과학자들은 그러한 연구에 필요한 세포를 분리해 내는 데 동물 효소를 이용하고 있다.)

◆ reproductive cloning(인간생식복제)

The technique should not be used to make genetically identical babies - called reproductive cloning.(그 기술은 "인간생식복제"라 일컬어지는, 유전적으로 동일한 인간들을 만들어 내는 데 사용돼서는 안 된다.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

◆줄기세포 연구의 기본 개념

Stem cells are primitive 'master'cells that can be programmed to become many kinds of tissue.(줄기세포는 여러 종류의 세포조직으로 성장하도록 프로그램될 수 있는 '원시모세포'-만능세포-이다.)

To make them patient-specific, the researchers took DNA from the skin cells of volunteers and put this genetic material into donated human eggs which had had their own genetic material removed.(줄기세포가 환자별로 특화될 수 있도록 연구원들은 지원자들의 피부세포로부터 DNA를 채취해 난자 기증자들의 유전물질이 제거된 난자에 주입시켰다.)

These eggs were grown to a very early stage of embryo development, around six days, when they were still just small balls of cells. The scientists then extracted the stem cells.(이러한 난자들은 약 6일 후 여전히 작은 세포 덩어리 상태인 초기 단계의 배아로 성장했다. 과학자들은 그 단계에서 줄기세포를 추출해냈다.)

◆대표적 찬반양론

Professor Ian Wilmut, from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh and creator of Dolly the sheep, said: "These new observations make a very significant and important step forward toward the use of cells from cloned human embryos for research and therapy."(복제양 돌리를 만들어 낸 에든버러의 로슬린 연구소의 이안 윌머트 교수는 "이러한 새로운 결과는 복제된 인간의 배아로부터 분리한 세포를 연구와 치료 목적으로 사용하는데 있어 매우 중요한 진보"라고 말했다.)

But Julia Millington,of in the UK,said: "Cloning for research purposes, which involves the manufacture of human embryos destined for experimentation and subsequent destruction,is profoundly unethical.(그러나 영국 생명옹호 연합의 줄리아 밀링턴은 "연구 목적의 인간복제는 실험용으로 사용된 뒤 파괴될 운명의 인간 배아를 만들어 내는 것을 수반하며,이는 심각하게 비윤리적"이라고 말했다.)
