장문의 글을 통해 세부 정보를 파악할 때도 처음부터 줄줄이 다 읽어가는 것은 바람직하지 않다.

우선 Skimming을 통해 전체 대의를 파악한 뒤,비중 있게 읽어야 할 부분과 가볍게 건너뛰어야 할 부분을 선별해서 다뤄야 한다.

이때는 연결사(discourse marker/signal word)의 도움을 받도록 하자.연결사는 글의 응집성(cohesion)을 높여주는 것으로 좋은 글을 쓰기 위해서는 제시된 논거들이 논리적으로 잘 연결될 수 있도록 반드시 적절하게 활용해야 한다.

모범적으로 잘 쓰인 글은 연결사만 주목해가며 선별적으로 읽어도 전체의 대의와 세부정보 파악까지 단숨에 끝낼 수 있다.

이번에는 인문.사회과학 계열 지망 학생들을 위해 국제화와 관련된 주제의 글을 제시문으로 선정했다.

The close of the Cold War era, hastened by the dissolution of socialist regimes, ended a half-century of confrontation between the United States and the former Soviet Union. This historical milestone provided a mandate for creating a new international order. Accordingly, the 1990s experienced a revolutionary transition from the old to the new order, a change none would have predicted during the Cold War.

With a lessening of ideological conflicts, the increasing significance of economic influence over military influence in determining the balance of power and in shaping the new order is becoming apparent. Even more importantly, on the economic side, the industrial structure in many countries is rapidly evolving due to major breakthroughs in information-telecommunications and related technologies. Transactions of goods and services are increasingly carried out through e-commerce. The borderlines between countries are becoming less important in terms of international trade. In this framework, over the next decade, the world economy will witness dramatic changes, even more so than what was experienced in the 1990s. These include,on the one hand, the accelerated pace of integration throughout the world, particularly in the economic and the social realm, which is called globalization. On the other hand, regionalization will also emerge as the economic power of the U.S. and EU(European Union) expands,and the ANIEs (Asia's Newly Industrialized Economies) along with China emerge as potent economic forces in the wake of the financial crisis that hit the region in 1997.

The simultaneous processes of globalization and regionalization in the world economy foretell potential friction and discord among the major players of the new world order in competition for an ever-larger piece of the economic pie. A look at history suggests that this is a likely possibility. What we are now witnessing is a tense interaction between the pressure for market liberalization and a new protectionist mood, accompanied by managed trade,technology protection, and environment-related protectionism and regionalism, all of which have increased the likelihood of repeating unpleasant episodes from the past.

세부 정보를 확인하기 위해 글을 읽더라도 먼저 Skimming으로 전체를 파악할 필요가 있다.

전체를 알면 세부 정보가 어떤 기능을 발휘하는지 알 수 있고 그 중요도를 판별할 수 있기 때문이다.

세 단락의 첫 문장을 읽어가며 대의를 파악해보자.

(1)Accordingly : 냉전 종식 후 구질서에서 신질서로의 혁명적 전이가 90년대에 발생했다.

(2)Even more importantly, on the economic side : 정보통신 산업 및 관련 기술과 전자상거래의 활성화를 통해 국경의 개념이 약화되었다.

(3)On the one hand : 전 세계적으로 급속한 경제적, 사회적 영역의 통합이 가속화되고 있는데 이를 '세계화 (globalization)'라고 한다.

(4)On the other hand : 미국과 유럽연합, 중국을 중심으로 한 아시아 신흥 공업국의 결속으로 '지역주의(regionalization)'도 동시에 일어나고 있다.

Skimming독해기술을 통한 대의 파악과 연결사를 통한 논리적 논거의 파악이 결합되면 세부적 글 읽기도 대단히 빠른 속도로 해결할 수 있다.
