[Reading Skills] 1. Bird's Eye View(조감)

모든 글 읽기에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 빨리 읽고,읽은 내용을 글과 말로 요약하고 활용할 수 있는 능력이다.


영어만 보면 처음부터 끝까지 꼼꼼히 읽고,분석하고,우리말로 멋지게 해석하려는 시도는 이제 중단돼야 한다.


다음의 연습문제를 통해 독해는 어떻게 해야 하며,요약은 어떻게 해야 하는지 학습해 보자.

Direction ; 다음 글을 읽고, 우리말로 간단히 요약하시오.(제한시간 10분)




The word economy comes from the Greek word for "one who manages a household." At first, this origin might seem peculiar.But,in fact, households and economies have much in common.


A household faces many decisions.It must decide which members of the household do which tasks and what each member gets in return: who cooks dinner? Who does the laundry? Who gets the extra dessert at dinner? Who gets to choose what TV show to watch? In short,the household must allocate its scarce resources among its various members, taking into account each member's abilities, efforts, and desires.


Like a household, a society faces many decisions.A society must decide what jobs will be done and who will do them.It needs some people to grow food, other people to make clothing, and still others to design computer software.Once society has allocated people(as well as land, buildings, and machines) to various jobs, it must also allocate the output of goods and services that they produce.It must decide who will eat caviar and who will eat potatoes.It must decide who will drive a Ferrari and who will take the bus.The management of society's resources is important because resources are scarce.Scarcity means that society has limited resources and therefore cannot produce all the goods and services people wish to have.Just as a household cannot give every member everything he or she wants, a society cannot give every individual the highest standard of living to which he or she might aspire.


Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources.In most societies, resources are allocated not by a single central planner but through the combined actions of millions of households and firms.Economists therefore study how people make decisions: how much they work, what they buy, how much they save, and how they invest their savings.Economists also study how people interact with one another.For instance, they examine how the multitude of buyers and sellers of a good together determine the price at which the good is sold and the quantity that is sold.Finally, economists analyze forces and trends that affect the economy as a whole, including the growth in average income, the fraction of the population that cannot find work, and the rate at which prices are rising.

이번 학습 목표는 제목에 제시된 것처럼 'Bird's Eye View', 즉 '조감'이다.


'나무를 보지 말고, 숲을 볼 수 있는' 안목을 기르자는 것이다.


이 글은 총 4개의 단락(paragraph)으로 구성돼 있다.


하나의 단락에서는 하나의 주제(topic)만을 다룬다.


첫 단락을 읽어 보면 경제의 어원적 의미 소개를 통해 가계와 경제를 비교할 것이라는 전개방식을 간파할 수 있다.


영어는 일반적으로 중요한 것을 먼저 제시하고 이를 풀어나가는 구조를 따르므로 처음 단락을 잘 읽고 글 전체의 전개방식을 예측하는 것이 최우선적으로 해야 할 일이다.


그런 다음 각 단락의 첫 문장을 먼저 빨리 'skimming'(훑어 읽기)해서 전체의 요지를 파악해야 한다.


그럼 각 단락의 첫 문장만 뽑아 읽어 보자.


A household faces many decisions.(가계는 많은 결정에 직면한다)


Like a household, a society faces many decisions.(가계와 마찬가지로 사회도 많은 결정에 직면한다)


The management of society's resources is important because resources are scarce.(사회의 자원을 잘 다루는 것이 중요한데 이유는 자원이 희소하기 때문이다)


Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources.(경제학은 사회가 그 희소한 자원을 어떻게 다루는지에 관한 연구다)


이렇게 각 단락의 첫 문장만 읽어 보아도 이글의 주제는 '경제학이란 무엇인가'라는 것을 알 수 있다.


그리고 마지막 단락에서 인과관계를 나타내는 therefore라는 연결사에 주목할 필요가 있으며,이어지는 열거의 연결사 also, finally에 주목해 보면 경제학자의 역할이 무엇인지도 세 가지에 걸쳐 언급하고 있음을 알 수 있다.


Economists study how people make decisions.(경제학자는 사람들이 어떻게 결정을 내리는지를 연구한다)


Economists study how people interact with one another.(경제학자는 사람들이 어떻게 상호작용하는지를 연구한다)


Economists analyze forces and trends that affect the economy as a whole.(경제학자는 전체 경제에 영향을 끼치는 힘과 경향에 관해 분석한다)


이렇게 전체를 조감하고 훑어 읽기를 통해 요지를 파악한 뒤, 글의 신호어(signal word) 역할을 하는 연결사를 잘 주목해 선별적으로 읽어 나가면 아무리 긴 글도 빠르고 정확하게 읽어 낼 수 있다.


이것이 진정한 독해다.


이를 바탕으로 매끄럽게 정리하면 훌륭한 요약문이 되는 것이다.
