쉬울수록 한번 더 생각하여야 한다.

학생들이 쉽게 실수하는 것이 숫자의 표현이며 물론，에세이를 쓸 때 숫자로 나타내야 하는 경우가 여러 번 생길 수 있다.

이번 호에는 아주 쉽게 생각하지만 막상 에세이를 쓸 때 많이 고민하고 어떻게 써야 할까 어려워하는 것 중의 하나인 숫자를 표기하는 방법에 대하여 공부하고자 한다.

어떤 때 아라비아 숫자를 쓰고，또 어떤 때 알파벳으로 숫자를 표기해야 하는가 하는 질문을 학생들로부터 많이 받고는 한다.

실제로 영작을 하다 보면 숫자를 써야 하는 경우가 생긴다.

이때 아라비아 숫자를 쓸 것인지 아니면 알파벳 철자로 표기할 것인지 꽤나 고민이 되는 경우가 있다.

이러한 경우에 대비하여 몇 가지 원칙을 알아둔다면 큰 도움이 될 것이다.

첫째로，알파벳 철자로 수를 표기하는 경우는 문장의 첫 부분을 숫자로 시작할 때와 four，thirty－four，four hundred，one million 등과 같이 한두 단어로 숫자를 표기할 수 있을 때이다.

반면에，숫자로 수를 표기하는 경우로 "The ages of the members are 19，22，25，and 33." 와 같이 숫자가 문장 중에서 하나의 무리를 이루어 사용될 때이다.

또한，290 혹은 3.14와 같이 알파벳으로 표현하려면 세 단어 이상이 필요할 때 숫자로 수를 표기한다.

마지막으로 주소，날짜，시각，금액，단위，경기 점수，수학적 비율，페이지 등을 나타낼 때는 숫자로 수를 표기하여야 한다.

위에 설명한 내용만 암기하고 익힌다면 영문을 작성할 때 숫자를 어떻게 표기하여야 하냐는 고민은 없어질 것이다.

Learning all these things would be much slower if we didn't play games.

Life would be much duller: too.

어떤 것이 변하게 될 때 또한 우리는 어떻게 적응할 수 있는지를 배운다.

계획한 목표에 어떻게 도달할 수 있을까 하는 방식을 배우게 되는 것이다.

전략을 배우는 것이다.

대부분의 사람들은 여가시간 없이 일만 한다는 것이 매우 나쁘다는 것을 알고 있다.

만약 우리가 게임을 즐기지 않는다면 이러한 모든 것을 배우는 것은 매우 느릴 것이다.

인생 역시 매우 지루할 것이다.
