▶ 요점4; 반복

영어는 기본적으로 반복을 하지 않는 언어이다. 영작문을 할 때도 한번 사용한 단어는 가능한 다시 반복해서 사용하지 않도록 해야 한다.

반복을 피하기 위해서는 다음의 3가지 방법이 주로 사용되니 숙지하기 바란다.

1. 대명사를 사용해 반복을 피하는 방법

People have their strong points as well as their weak ones.

2. 대동사를 사용해 반복을 피하는 방법

He earns more money in a day than I do in a week.

3. 동의어, 유사어를 사용해 반복을 피하는 방법

Heaven certainly looks after the man who takes care of business first.

위의 세 가지 반복을 피하는 방법 중에서 실제로 영작문을 할 때 가장 자주 쓰이면서도 중요한 것은 동의어나 유사어를 사용해 반복을 피하는 방법이다.

이러한 동의어, 유사어를 습득하기 위해서는 영어 사전 중 동의어, 유사어 사전을 활용하면 풍부한 어휘력을 키울 수 있다.

· to pin on; The prosecuting attorney tried to pin the murder on the victim's husband，but the jury returned a verdict of 'not guilty'

Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers.

I agree that schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers.

I believe that students have the right to express their opinions of teachers and that their opinions should be known by the school.

In addition，I think that student evaluation of teachers will help keep the quality of the teaching high.

Finally，if schools require students to evaluate their teachers，it will help the students feel that they are an important part of the school and that their opinions and ideas can make a difference.

In the past in my country，teachers had total power over students.

The students had to obey the teachers completely.

Teachers would often use physical punishment of students for doing something wrong，and，in some cased，would accept money from the parents to give their children good grades.

When I was in elementary school，one of my teachers would give assignments to students to make classroom silent，and then would often take a nap.

If the schools had listened to the students，these abuses would not have been possible.

Of course，I believe most teachers are hard working and sincere，but even in cases where the teacher is performing well，student evaluations may be helpful to the teacher and administrators to improve their teaching and school and to gain important insights about the needs and thoughts of their students.

And the power to give their opinions and get the attentions from their teachers and school administrators gives students good chance to be active parts in their own education.

However，even though I believe students should evaluate teachers，I think some students are immature，and may use this power in a bad way.

They might give a bad evaluation because a teacher made them work hard，or did not give them the grade they wanted.

For this reason，administrators should not fire teachers only because of some bad evaluations.

They should give the teacher enough time to show they are good teachers，and understand that some students may give poor evaluations because they are angry，immature，or disappointed in their grade.

학교는 학생들에게 그들의 선생님에 대하여 평가하도록 해야 한다는 것에 동의한다.

학생들이 그들의 선생님들에 대한 의견을 표현할 권리를 가지고 있으며，그러한 의견들을 학교는 알아야만 한다고 믿는다.

더욱이 선생님들에 대한 학생들의 평가가 높은 품질의 가르침을 유지하는데 도움을 줄 것이라고 생각한다.

마지막으로，만약 학교가 학생들에게 그들의 선생님들을 평가할 것을 요구한다면，학생들은 자신들이 학교에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다고 느끼게 되는 것을 도와주고 그들의 의견과 아이디어들을 다르게 만들 수 있을 것이다.

과거에 선생님들은 학생들을 완전하게 억압할 권력을 가지고 있었다.

학생들은 완벽하게 선생님에게 복종하여야만 했다.

때때로 선생님들은 잘못한 일에 대하여 학생들을 체벌하곤 했으며，어떤 경우는 학부모로부터 자식들의 좋은 점수를 위하여 금품을 받기도 했다.

초등학교 시절 나를 가르친 선생님 중의 한 분은 낮잠을 자기 위해 학생들에게 과제를 내 주어 조용하게 만들곤 했다.

만약 학교가 학생들의 의견을 주의 깊게 들었다면 이러한 학대는 불가능했을 것이다.

물론 대부분의 선생님들은 열심히 일하고 성실하다고 믿는다.

하지만 가르침이 잘 이루어지는 학교일지라도，학생들의 평가는 선생님들이나 학교 행정부에 교육과정과 학교를 발전시키는데 도움이 될 것이며，학생들의 요구와 생각들에 관해 잘 알게 될 것이다.

학생들은 선생님이나 학교로부터 의견을 제출할 자신감과 관심들이 그들 자신의 교육에 더 열성적이 되는 좋은 기회가 된다.

학생들이 그들의 선생님을 평가해야만 한다고 생각하지만，어떤 학생들은 아직 성숙하지 않으며 이러한 힘을 나쁜 방식으로 사용할 수도 있다.

그러한 학생들은 자신이 원하는 성적을 주지 않았거나 혹은 숙제를 너무 많이 하게 만들었기 때문에 특정 선생님에게 나쁜 평가를 내릴 수도 있다.

학교 행정부는 나쁜 평가를 받았다는 이유만으로 선생님을 해고하지 말아야 한다.

선생님들에게 그들이 좋은 선생님이라는 것을 보여줄 수 있는 충분한 시간을 주어야 하며，어떤 학생들은 선생님에게 화가 나거나，미성숙하고，자신의 성적에 불만이 있어 나쁜 평가를 했다는 것을 이해해야만 한다.
