▶ 일반적 실수 2 : 주어와 동사가 분리 되었을 때 주어－동사 일치의 실수

영어 시험을 볼 때，주어－동사 일치에 대한 문제는 수없이 다뤄지는 것 중 하나다.

그 중，쉽게 실수하는 것이 문장의 동사 앞에 주어에 관한 추가 정보를 삽입한 것이다.

아래의 예와 같은 문장을 살펴보면,

The local congressman，a reliable representative of both community and statewide interests，are among the most respected persons in the public sector.

위의 문장에서 주어－동사 일치가 옳은 것인지 판단하기 위해서는 먼저 주어를 찾아야 한다.

언뜻 본다면 동사인 are 앞에 복수인 'community and statewide interests' 가 보이지만 이것은 주어가 아니다.

이 구는 주어인 congressman과 이것의 동사가 되어야 할 is(are 가 아니다) 사이에 삽입된 변형절의 일부인 것이다.

그러므로 위의 문장에서 주어와 동사가 일치하지 않는다.

영작문을 할 경우 주어를 한번 더 설명하기 위하여 주어와 동사 사이에 여러 가지 정보를 넣을 수 있다.

하지만 영작문을 쓰는 본인 자신도 모르는 사이에 주어는 단수로 하고 부연설명으로 인하여 동사를 복수로 사용하는 실수를 범하지 말아야 한다.

Wrong : I have finished a game of tennis with John when Bob arrived.

Right : I had finished a game of tennis with John when Bob arrived.

Wrong : Since Bob graduated last year，he had been traveling around Europe.

Right : Since Bob graduated last year，he has been traveling around Europe.

Wrong : It has taken me a long time to do the homework last night.

Right : It took me a long time to do the homework last night.

Wrong : Since 1976 he is living in Brazil.

Right : Since 1976 he has been living in Brazil.

For one thing，they'll give you a different way of looking at the world.

You，on the other hand，can help them loosen up a little bit，and do things more on the spur of the moment.
