[이블린 킴의 iBT writing] Essay <27> － Opportunity Knocks but once!

영어는 기본적으로 반복을 피하는 언어다.

영작문을 할 때도 한번 사용한 단어는 되도록이면 반복해 쓰지 않아야 한다.

이전 호를 살펴 보면 영작문을 쓸 때 반복을 피하기 위해서 동의어나 유사어를 사용하라는 것을 강조했다.

하지만 반복을 피하기 위해서 무턱대고 동의어나 유사어를 쓸 경우 앞뒤의 문맥이 어색해질 수 있다.

다시 말하면 단어를 사용할 때 단순히 단어의 평면적 의미만을 생각하지 말고 각각의 뉘앙스를 구분해야 하는 것이다.

예를 들어 '해고하다' 라는 뜻의 단어로는 dismiss，sack，fire，bump 등이 있다.

의미는 거의 비슷하지만 쓰이는 상황이나 뉘앙스는 각각 다르다.

dismiss의 경우 공식적인 문어체 문장에서 '해고하다'라는 의미로 사용되며，일상적인 구어체의 표현에서는 sack，fire와 같은 '파면시키다'를 사용하며 조금은 속어적인 표현으로 bump(내쫓다)를 사용한다.

이러한 단어들을 단지 문장에서 반복을 피하기 위해 마구 사용하여 작문한다면 문체상 매우 혼란스러운 글이 될 수 있다.

따라서 이런 경우는 단지 반복을 피한다는 원칙에 집착해 동의어들을 나열할 것이 아니라 단어의 뉘앙스를 구분해 선택적으로 단어를 사용해야 한다.

그러나 문제는 영어 단어의 뉘앙스를 구분하는 일은 쉽지 않다는 것이다.

단어 속에서 뉘앙스란 그 나라의 문화를 반영하기 때문에 그 문화에서 생활하지 않는 사람들이 그 뉘앙스를 완벽하게 이해한다는 것이 어려운 일이다.

One person or the other is hurt and most often，a teenager hurt by love will feel that the world is coming to an end.

However，the truth is that learning about what to do and what not to do in a relationship is an important lesson.

This experience helps to prepare people for serious relationships in their adult lives.

Learning to interact with the other gender helps teenagers prepare for the rest of life.

Natural disasters are，like first love，experiences that blindside us.

Many times，we are simple not expecting a flood or a tornado.

When I was in college，out town was in a low－lying area.

Whenever it rained heavily，there were always some houses that were flooded.

However，those that had experienced a flood before knew better than to move into a first－floor apartment.

The previous devastation of a flood had taught them an important lesson for later in life.

Many of the circumstances in our lives are experiences that we would change.

However，for the most part，if we step back and wait a while，we find that life will teach us lessons.

Even the difficulties in our lives may provide us with valuable knowledge.

The old adage says that "every cloud has a silver lining."

If we wait long enough，we will find the silver lining in most every bad situation.

이러한 어려움들은 타인과 다르기에 자연재해 때문에 혹은 우리가 어쩔 수 없는 환경으로 인하여 발생할 수 있다.

젊은 사람들에게 가장 고통스러운 교훈 중의 하나는 첫사랑이다.

이러한 경험은 그들이 어른이 된 삶에서 심각한 인간관계에 대하여 배우는 것을 준비하게 도와준다.

다른 이성과의 교류를 배우는 것은 남아있는 삶에 대하여 십대들이 준비하는 데 도움을 주는 것이다.

첫사랑과 같이 자연재해도 우리가 겪을 수 없는 경험들이다.

대부분의 시간 동안 우리는 홍수나 토네이도를 만난다고 생각하지는 않는다.

대학에 다니는 동안，우리 마을은 저지대 지역이었다.

많은 비가 내릴 때마다 홍수에 물에 잠기는 집들이 있었다.

그러나 홍수를 경험한 사람들은 아파트 1층으로 이사하지 않는 것이 좋다는 것을 경험했다.

이러한 홍수에 대한 재해는 그들에게 나중에 어떻게 살아야 하는지 가르쳐준 중요한 교훈이 되었다.

우리의 삶에서 많은 환경들은 우리가 바꿀 수 있었던 경험들이다.

그러나，대부분은 만약 우리가 뒤로 돌아가고 잠시 동안 기다린다면 우리를 가르쳐줄 교훈이 있다는 것을 알게 된다.

우리 삶에서 고난들조차 귀중한 지식을 제공할지도 모른다.

옛 말씀에 "모든 구름은 환한 언저리를 가지고 있다"는 말이 있다.

우리가 만약 충분히 기다린다면 대부분의 어려운 상황에서 희망을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
