때때로 에세이를 쓰다 보면 문장 안에 수식어가 붙은 긴 '표현'을 넣어야 하는 경우가 자주 생긴다.

이 때 문장의 앞과 뒤의 균형을 생각하지 않고 긴 내용의 '표현'을 그냥 써내려 간다면 어색한 문장이 되고 말 것이다.

여기에도 방법은 있다.

앞 부분과 뒤쪽 부분의 균형을 맞추기 위해 긴 표현을 가급적 문장 뒤쪽에 위치시키는 것이다.

다시 말한다면，영어에서 한 문장 안에 긴 표현과 짧은 표현이 동시에 사용될 때는 가능한 한 긴 '표현'을 문장 뒤쪽에 놓음으로써 문장의 균형을 맞춰 준다.

예를 들어, 'A number of temptation into which we may easily fall exist' 같은 문장은 틀린 것은 아니다.

하지만 어색하다.

주어인 'A number of temptation into which we may easily fall'이 동사인 exist에 비해 너무 길어 문장의 균형이 전혀 맞지 않는다.

이런 경우 비인칭 주어인 There를 사용하여 긴 주어 부분을 동사와 바꾸어 문장의 뒤쪽으로 보내면 균형이 맞는다.

다시 쓰면，'There exists a number of temptations into which we may easily fall'이 훨씬 매끄러운 문장이 되는 것이다.

Use specific reasons and details to support your choice.

A one-day visitor to Korea might do well to spend that day exploring the area around Sejongno and Jonggak in Seoul.

Everything that is admirable，colorful，and notable about Korea is represented in that little part of the city.

For example，at the north end of sejongno stands Kyongbok Palace.

It is perhaps that most magnificent monument to Korea's history.

Next，walk past the great gate at Kwanghwamun，cross the street，and walk down Sejongno.

On the right stands the mighty Sejong Cultural Center，named for Korea's greatest king.

Just ahead is the monument to Admiral Yi，Korea's military hero.

This is one of the most historic streets in the world.

Now take a left and walk toward crowded Jonggak.

Suddenly，you pass from historic Korea to modern，high-tech Korea.Internet rooms，electronics stores，and countless other businesses show the visitor that Korea and its technology are leading the world into the 21st century.

Lest the visitor think entirely an electronic society，he or she should spend a few minutes in one or more of Jonggak's superb bookstores.

Those huge，crowded bookstores are proof that Korea is probably the most literate country on earth.

Korean cusine is well-represented in Jonggak too.

Restaurants there are good places to sample the low-fat，healthful cooking that makes Korean food a find alternative to the high-fat Western diet.

Of course，Korea also has beautiful mountains and beaches: but for one-day visitors，Sejongno and Jonggak together pack the best of Korea into a few hectares of land.

단지 하루만 한국을 방문할 기회가 주어진 외국인이 있다면 서울의 세종로와 종각 주변을 구경하는 것이 하루를 아주 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 방법일 것이다.

한국에서 감탄할 만하고 다양하며 유명한 모든 것이 서울의 이 작은 부분 안에 표현되고 있다.

예를 들어，세종로의 북쪽에는 경복궁이 자리 잡고 있다.

이 곳이 아마 한국 역사상 가장 위대한 조형물이 아닌가 싶다.

다음으로，광화문의 큰 문을 지나 길을 건너고 세종로 밑으로 걸어간다.

길의 오른편으로 한국의 가장 위대한 왕의 이름을 딴 세종문화회관이 자리 잡고 있다.

여기의 바로 앞에 한국 군인의 영웅인 이순신 장군 동상이 서 있다.

여기야말로 세계에서 가장 역사적인 거리인 것이다.

여기서 좌측 방향으로 걸어 종각 쪽으로 향한다.

갑자기 한국의 역사적 느낌에서 현대의 하이테크 한국을 지나가게 된다.

PC방，전자제품 가게,그리고 셀 수 없을 정도의 가지가지 가게들은 한국의 방문자에게 한국이야말로 세계에서 21세기 첨단 기술의 선두를 달리고 있음을 느끼게 해 준다.

방문자가 한국이 전적으로 기술 사회라고 생각할 수 없게 종각의 아주 훌륭한 서점에서 몇 분간을 보내는 것이 좋다.

거대하고 아주 붐비는 서점들은 한국이 지구상 가장 문학열이 강한 나라임을 증명한다.

한국 요리 역시 종각에서 잘 나타내고 있다.

종각에 위치한 레스토랑들은 서양식의 고지방 음식을 대신하여 저지방과 건강한 음식의 본보기를 보여줄 수 있는 좋은 장소이다.

물론 한국에도 아름다운 산들과 해변이 있다.

그러나 하루만 방문하는 방문객이라면 세종로와 종각이 작은 지역에서 최고의 시간을 보낼 수 있는 장소이다.
