[이블린 킴의 iBT writing] Essay <23> － “Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss！”

한글을 포함해 어떠한 언어든지 구두 혹은 문장 내에서 처음과 끝의 일관성이 유지되어야 한다.

예를 들어，한 문장 내에 여러 개의 목적어를 사용하였고 처음 사용한 목적어를 동명사로 사용하였다면 그 다음에 사용되는 목적어들도 가능한 일관성을 유지하기 위하여 동명사를 사용하여야 한다.

자신이 쓴 영작문을 다시 읽어보고 무엇인가 흐름이 매끄럽지 못하다면 이러한 일관성을 유지하며 문장을 작성하였는지 확인해 볼 필요가 있다.

간단한 예로 "She is young，enthusiastic，and she has talent."라는 짧은 문장 내에 전혀 일관성이 보이지 않는다.

이 칼럼을 애독하는 학생이라면 이러한 실수는 하지 않을 것이다.

하지만 또한 너무 쉽게 실수를 할 수 있는 문장이기도 하다.

일관성을 유지하기 위해서는 "She is young，enthusiastic，and talented."라고 작성하는 것이 매끄러운 흐름이다.

조금 긴 문장으로 예를 들어보자.

"Not knowing what to do and since I felt embarrassed，I called the police."라는 문장에서 대부분의 학생들은 별로 틀린 것이 없는데 하는 의구심을 느낄 수도 있다.

하지만，"Not knowing what to do and feeling embarrassed，I called the police."라는 문장을 본다면 왜 위의 문장의 흐름이 매끄럽지 못한지 한눈에 파악할 수 있다.

지난 2주 동안 중요시 하였던 반복을 피하여 문장을 작성하는 것과 이번 주 일관성을 가지는 문장과 문맥을 사용하여 영작문을 한다면 흐름의 맥을 놓치는 경우는 없을 것이다.

We，as human beings，have a very complicated relationship with our natural environment.

We spent thousands of dollars to take treks and safaris，fill our homes with tropical plants，and yearn for open spaces.

At the same time，we drive gas－guzzling cars，demand that all our food be protectively sealed in plastic，and deplete many natural resources.

In my opinion，the earth is being harmed by human activity.

Firstly，there are few places where the hand of man in not visible.

Even in the most remote wilderness，one can expect to find an old soda can or a cigarette butt from a previous visitor.

No other species has left such an indelible mark.

We have polluted the air，water and land，hunted species to extinction，and crisscrossed the globe with an intricate network of roads，dwellings，and buildings.

We have fallen out of step with the rhythm of organic life and have attempted to transform the rest of the world to follow our rhythm and serve our needs.

However，if human activity does not make the Earth a better place to live，it certainly makes it a more comfortable place to live.

Fast cars make it possible for us to get from one place to another in very little time，computers make it possible to process great amounts of information using very little time and energy，and power plants allow us to run life－support machines through the night.

We have certainly disturbed the natural flow of life，but change has been to our advantage.

인간은 주위의 자연환경과 매우 복잡한 관계를 가지고 있다.

수천 달러를 소비하여 자연여행과 사파리를 가며，열대 식물과 집을 가득 채우고，넓은 공간을 가지고 싶어한다.

동시에 우리는 기름으로 움직이는 차를 운전하고，플라스틱 용기에 우리의 모든 음식이 안전하게 포장되기를 원하며，많은 자연 자원을 고갈시킨다.

내 의견으로는 인간의 활동에 의하여 지구는 피해를 받고 있다고 여긴다.

첫 번째로，지구상에 인간의 손이 닿지 않은 장소는 거의 없다고 본다.

가장 멀리 떨어진 야생지역 일지라도，사람들은 이미 다녀간 사람들에 의해 버려진 청량음료 깡통이라든지 혹은 담배 꽁초를 찾을 수 있다.

인간은 공기，물 그리고 땅을 오염시켰으며，생물을 멸종까지 사냥하고，도로，거주자 그리고 빌딩들의 복잡한 연결구조로 지구를 십자로 갈라놓았다.

우리는 유기 생명체의 리듬적인 단계를 망쳐버렸고 세계의 나머지 생명체들을 우리가 요구하는 방식으로 변형하려고 시도하는 중이다.

그러나，만약 인간의 행동이 지구를 더 살기 좋은 장소로 만들지 않았다면，확실히 살기 편안한 장소로 만들기는 하였다.

빠른 자동차는 매우 짧은 시간에 장소를 이동하게 하였고，컴퓨터는 매우 적은 시간과 에너지로 엄청난 양의 정보를 처리 가능하게 하였으며，전력 공장은 야간에 생명 지지기계를 작동하게 만들었다.

인간은 확실히 자연 생태계의 흐름을 방해하였지만，그것은 인간에게 이득으로 변화 되어왔다.
