[이블린 킴의 iBT writing] Essay ①－You took the words right out of my mouth!

지난호까지 iBT TOEFL의 에세이인 Independent Essay와 Integrated Essay를 어떻게 쓰는 것인지 대충 훑어보았다.

본 연재를 꼼꼼히 읽고 공부한 학생들은 교실에서 직접 수업받는 느낌에는 못 미치겠지만 그래도 대강의 아웃라인은 그릴 수 있을 것이다.

이번호부터는 iBT의 기출 주제를 하나하나 다뤄보고 그 주제에 응용해서 쓸 수 있는 적절한 표현과 단어를 익혀 보도록 하겠다.

여러분이 다시 한번 명심할 것은 에세이의 기본은 잘 쓴 남의 에세이와 표현을 암기하는 것이 기본이다.

즉 영어는 단어와 표현 암기가 기본이다.

암기란 누구에게나 괴로운 것이다.

참고 꾸준히 암기해서 매회의 연재된 내용을 100퍼센트 암기하고 이해하자.

이번호부터 새로 idioms를 포함시켰다.

영어 단어라 함은 단어/숙어/phrasal verbs를 지칭한다.

여러분의 에세이는 단어만 계속 나열하므로 항상 자기가 하고 싶은 표현에 한계가 있음을 채점자에게 노출하게 된다.

아래에 Idioms，Grammar，Vocabs sections을 꼭 다 암기하기 바란다.

매일 소설 책 읽듯이 자주 보기만 해도 상당히 효과가 있음을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.

Idioms :

to get in/ to get out of : (승용차) 타다/내리다

to get on/ to get off : (대중교통) 타다/내리다

to tire out ＝ to wear out : Does studying for final exams wear you out？

to talk over : I talked over the matter with my wife.

to get along with ＝ to get on with : How are you getting on with your studies？

to take out 제거하다/데이트하다 : Did you take Jane out last night？

to wait on : Has anyone waited on you yet？

to talk over : Can we talk it over tomorrow？

to get back : My dad get back from his business trio to Canada.

to get over : It seems that Mr. Mason will never get over the death of his wife.

for the time being : For the time being，Jenny is working as a waitress，but she hopes to become an actress soon.

for good : Are you finished with school for good，or will you continue your studies some day？

Grammar Point : Tense

wrong : I have finished a game of tennis with John when Bob arrived.

right : I had finished a game of tennis with John when Bob arrived.

wrong : Since Bob graduated last year，he had been traveling around Europe.

right : Since Bob graduated last year，he has been traveling around Europe.

wrong : It has taken me a long time to do the homework last night.

right : It took me a long time to do the homework last night.

Vocabs :

요즘 수업준비를 잘하지 않거나 수업할 자격이 없는 선생님들이 많은 것 같다.

이런 선생님들 때문에 많은 학생들이 제대로 많은 것을 배울 수가 없다.

오늘날 몇몇 사람들은 학교가 선생님들을 평가해야 한다고 주장한다.

자격미달의 선생님들을 학교에서 해고할 수 있기 때문에 교사평가제 도입을 나는 찬성한다.

이 제도는 선생님들을 긴장시켜 더 열심히, 그리고 효과적으로 강의하게 하도록 만들기 때문이다.

우선 이 시스템은 학생을 가르칠 자격이 없는 선생을 퇴출하는 데 효과가 있다.

수업을 준비하지 않거나 학생을 가르칠 자격이 없는 선생님들이 너무나 많다.

이런 선생님들은 학생들이 원하는 것을 가르칠 자격이 없다.

게다가 이런 자격미달인 선생님으로부터 배운 학생들은 능력있는 선생님께 질 좋은 수업을 들은 아이들보다 기대 이하의 교육을 받을 게 뻔하기 때문이다.

그러므로 자격이 없는 선생님들을 이 시스템으로 평가해서 학교에서 물러나야 한다고 본다.

또한 이 시스템은 자격미달의 선생님들을 제거할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 남아있는 선생님들도 어떻게 하면 좀 더 질 좋은 수업을 할 수 있을까 하고 연구하고 고민하게 만든다.

열심히 노력하지 않으면 언젠가는 낮은 평가를 받아 나중에라도 해고될 수 있기 때문이다.

그러므로 선생님들은 끊임없이 노력해야 하고 그런 선생님들께 배운 학생들은 수업을 쉽게 이해하고 많은 양의 지식을 습득할 수 있을 것이다.

English :

These days，It seems that there are many teachers who do not prepare for their classes well and who are inadequate to teach their students.

Due to these teachers，many students are not able to learn many things and subjects.

Nowadays，some people say that schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers.

I agree with this idea because this type of evaluation can lead to the elimination of unqualified teachers.

This will compel teachers to teach students well and cause them to think how they can teach their students more efficiently.

First，this system can eliminate teachers who are unqualified to teach students.

There are many teachers who do not prepare for their classes and who are inadequate to teach their students.

These teachers can not teach students what they need to learn.

Moreover，the students who learn from these teachers obtain less knowledge than students who learn from teachers who always prepare for their classes and teach students skillfully.

Therefore，teachers who are unqualified to teach students have to be fired and this system is proper to fire those teachers.

This system not only eliminates unqualified teachers，but can remind teachers who have not been fired that they should continuously keep thinking about how they can teach students more efficiently.

Although a teacher has not been fired，if he or she does not keep thinking about efficient ways to teach students，next time the teacher can lose his or her job.

Thus，teachers will keep thinking about the efficient ways to teach students，and students who learn from those teachers will be ale to easily understand what is being taught and obtain a greater amount of knowledge.

The rule is simple.

Teachers who are qualified to teach students should teach students and those who are unqualified should not do so.

This system is very good because it can remove teachers who are unqualified to teach students and make teachers keep thinking how to teach students more efficiently.
