[이블린 킴의 iBT writing] Integrate Essay ①-whynotgoforit！

Integrate Essay 의 목적은 수업시간에 교수님의 수업을 듣고 이해하는 능력과 교과서를 읽고 요약할 수 있는가를 알아보기 위한 시험이다.

간단히 말해서 summary test이다.

형식은 independent Essay처럼 서론(1 paragraph)，본론(2 paragraphs) 결론(1 paragraph)으로 200자를 충족시키면 된다.

CBT 시험에서는 SAT와 달리 (SAT는 반드시 주어진 종이의 마지막 줄까지 채워야한다) 글자 수에 구애를 받지 않았다.

즉 글자 수가 좀 모자라더라도 내용만 충실하면 높은 점수 획득이 가능했다.

그러나 iBT는 워낙 에세이 고득점자가 많아지다 보니 최근에 채점자들이 글자 수에 민감하다고 한다.

그러니 반드시 요구되어진 200자를 다 채우도록 하자.

Integrate Essay의 특성상(reading 과 listening 의 예문이 필요하므로) 이 지문에서 쓸 예문은 다양한 토플 책에서 발췌할 것이고 책의 제목을 명시할 것이다.

특정 책이 이 지문에서 언급되었다고 해서 그 책이 반드시 좋은 책이라는 뜻이 아님을 미리 밝혀둔다.

이번호에서는 일단 reading part만 요약해보고 다음호에서 듣기지문을 요약해 reading과 listening 의 points를 다 넣어서 하나의 summary를 만드는 연습을 하도록 하자.

Integrate Essay의 가장 중요한 point는 지문을 읽고 반드시 객관적으로 에세이를 써야 한다.

Independent Essay처럼 본인의 의견을 넣어서 에세이를 쓰면 반드시 감점이다.

읽은 지문 그대로 그리고 들은 그대로만 요약해 쓰는 것이 Integrate Essay의 point이다.

아래의 reading 지문을 다시 한 번 읽어보고 요약해 보자.

Reading :

Among the many challenges to the world's effort to overcome poverty are government corruption，geographic isolation，disease and natural disasters.

Nearly half of the world's population is classified as poor，having been divided into three degrees of poverty ; extreme poverty，moderate poverty and relative poverty.

The World Bank's definition of extreme poverty is based on an income of less than $1 U.S. or the equivalent per day.

This means that such households cannot pay for all their basic needs for survival.

In other words，they do not have access to enough food，safe drinking water，proper sanitation，and basic health care.

Adequate shelter，preventative medication and education，even warm clothing are out of the question for such families living in developing countries.

Those who suffer from moderate poverty can cover their basic needs with an income of $1 to $ 2 U.S. per day，but barely.

Food lacks adequate nutrition，clean water is not always easily accessible and health care is still out of reach.

It is still a struggle for the moderately poot to gain the advantages that education would offer.

These households are a long way from achieving relative poverty－－ a level described as being below the national average，and they are unable to afford things that the middle class take for granted.

The World Bank estimates that 1.1 billion live in extreme poverty and suffer from drought，civil wars，manuduction and AIDS.

In the reading passage，according to the author，the world is trying very hard to fight off poverty in the world. (Longman iBT)

아래의 summary는 iBT 공인 110점대 학생이 쓴 에세이다.

아주 작은 문법적인 실수가 보이지만 이런 정도이면 만점이 무난하니 여러분도 읽어보고 잘못된 부분을 고쳐 보도록 하자.

이 정도 길이 또는 조금 더 짧은 길이의 본문이 두 개 필요하고 간단한 (2줄 정도)의 서론과 본론이 필요하다.

다음호에서는 듣기 지문을 읽어보고 요약해 이번호의 리딩 지문 요약과 합쳐 하나의 멋진 summary를 만들어보자.

Despite all the efforts from the world，some countries still suffer from poverty.

Poverty is divided into three categories and the writer explains them thoroughly.

Extreme poverty is described as a situation in which a household cannot meet any basic needs for survive.

People in this situation do not have any access to a shelter，medicine，and education.

Moderate poverty is also defined as a situation where people earn no more than one or two dollars a day and barely support themselves.

They suffer from not having any access to clean water，medical care，and education.

These people do have any ability to buy necessities to lead a 'normal' life.
