Independent Essay는 두 가지로 구별될 수 있다는 것을 이미 지난 시간에 배웠다.

하나는 free essay이고 다른 하나는 compare & contrast 에세이다.

문제는 compare & contrast 에세이에서 학생들이 출제자가 원하는 포인트를 모르고 지나치는 것이 상당한 감점으로 이어진다는 것이다.

Compare & Contrast Essay는 Free Essay와 똑같이 쓰되 다른 점은 두 번째 body paragraph의 마지막 부분에 반대 의견을 꼭 써 주어야 한다.

예를 들어서 GMO(genetically modified food)가 인류에 득이 된다고 생각하는가? 해가 된다고 생각하는가? 라는 질문이 있다고 가정하자.

그리고 본인의 thesis statement가 GMO food에 찬성한다라고 가정하고 에세이를 쓴다면 두 가지

points는 다음과 같을 것이다.

첫 번째는 "GMO food는 인류의 식량난 해결에 도움이 된다".

두 번째는 "의학과 불치병 환자들에게 획기적인 발전이 될 것"이다.

여기에서 두 번째 지문 마지막 끝나기 전에 반대 의견, 즉 "물론 GMO food는 윤리적인 문제와 인류 건강에 해악을 끼칠 수도 있다"라는 point를 반드시 써주어야 한다.

그 이유는 채점자 입장에서는 에세이를 쓰는 당사자가 주어진 주제에 대해서 장점과 단점을 모두 파악하고 있어야 된다고 믿기 때문이다.

지난호의 에세이는 compare & contrast를 잘 표현한 에세이다.

아래의 예문은 두 번째 paragraph만 지난호에서 뽑은 것이다.

서론에서 thesis statement，points 2개，그리고 두 번째 문단에서 굵은 글자 부분이 가산점이 되는 부분이다.

지난호를 구해서 에세이를 다시 읽어보도록 하자.

에세이를 지면으로 강의한다는 것이 쉽지만은 않다.

그 이유는 이 글을 읽는 학생들이 이해를 했는지 못했는지를 알 수가 없기 때문이다.

다시 한번 강조하지만 수업을 듣는 것과 배운 것을 바탕으로 응용하는 것은 별개의 문제다.

반드시 이 칼럼에서 배운 것을 본인의 에세이에 접목시켜 보아야 한다.

만약에 질문이 있거나 도저히 이해가 가지 않는다면 필자에게 질문을 해도 좋다.

Another essential truth is that most advertisements contain a lot of lies and exaggerations. (2nd point)

For instance，it is easily noticeable that all products are No.1 in the charts.

Moreover，according to advertisements，almost every good product has won several annual awards，which does not make sense at all.

This truth obviously shows the negative effect of advertisement which are only intended to maximize the revenues without considering the mandatory need to tell the truth.

Some people might insist he advertisements improve our lives by providing us with information about new products.

Of course，it is undeniable that most people rely on advertisements as their source of information about new products.

However，it must first be considered whether buying new products is beneficial for our lives.

In most cases，purchasing new products despite the old ones still being in good condition，only leads to a useless waste of money.

korean ; 우리의 인생에서 우리는 많은 문제들에 부딪힌다.

그러나 많은 기회들 또한 주어진다.

만약 우리가 열심히 일함으로써 우리 스스로를 준비한다면 우리 앞에 놓여진 많은 기회들을 볼 수 있다.

그래서 심지어 우리의 문제들을 기회로 만들 수 있다.

열심히 일하는 것 없이는 기회가 주어지지 않는다는 것이 사실이다.

그러나 나는 성공이라는 것은 열심히 일하는 것뿐만이 아니라 행운 또한 있어야 만들어지는 것이라고 생각한다.

첫째로 만약 열심히 일하는 것으로 성공이 온다면 모든 사람들은 성공해야만 한다.

열심히 일하는 너무 많은 사람들이 있다.

심지어 밤을 새워서라도 열심히 일하는 많은 사람들이 있다.

그러나 실제로 성공하는 사람들은 극소수이다.

이것은 열심히 일하는 것만이 성공을 이루는 부분이 아니라는 것을 보여준다.

예를 들어 검사가 되기를 원했던 나의 친구는 시험에 합격하기 위해 열심히 공부했다.

그는 하루에 단지 두 시간만 자고 나머지 시간엔 공부를 했다.

그러나 그는 계속해서 시험에 불합격했다.

그가 시험을 칠 때마다 그는 대부분을 알았지만 모르는 몇 가지 문제들이 있었다.

운이 없게도 그는 어려운 문제들이 주어지는 불운으로 불합격한 것이었지 전반적인 실력이 형편없어서가 아니었다.

이것으로부터 우리는 행운이 성공의 중요한 부분이라는 것을 볼 수 있다.

게다가 사람들은 좋은 상황 하에서 성공적이다.

"원숭이도 나무에서 떨어질 때가 있다"라는 속담처럼 말이다.

사람이 나쁜 상황에 처해 있을 때 심지어 전문가들도 실수를 할지 모른다.

좋은 상황은 더 나은 상황으로 이어지고 그래서 그것은 희망적인 결과로 이어진다.

그러나 상황은 계속해서 변함으로 항상 좋은 상황 하에 있는 것은 어렵다.

좋은 환경을 만드는 것은 단순히 운이다.

행운이 사람들을 좋은 상황으로 이끌기 때문에 행운은 성공의 중요한 부분이다.

이 두 가지 이유 때문에 나는 열심히 일하는 것이 성공을 위한 필수라고 생각한다.

그러나 열심히 일하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않다. 행운 또한 성공을 얻기 위해 요구된다.

English ; In our lives we confront may problems but are also given many chances.

If we prepare ourselves by working hard，we are able to see many chances that are in front of us，and can even make our problems into opportunities.

It is a fact that without hard work : there are no chances but I think success is not made by only hard work but with luck as well.

First，if success came with the hard work，then every man should be successful.

There are so many people who work hard，even all night but there are only few people who truly succeed.

This shows that hard work is not the only part of success.

For example，my friend who wanted to be a prosecutor studied hard to pass the exam.

He slept only two hours a day and studied the rest but he failed again and again.

Every time he took the test，he knew most of the parts but there were a few questions that he did not know.

Unfortunately，he failed because he was unlucky to be given hard questions not because his overall ability was poor.

From this we can see that luck is an important part of success.

In addition，people are successful when they are in a good condition.

Just as the saying goes，" Even monkeys sometimes fall off the tree."

When people are in bad condition，even experts may make mistakes.

A good condition leads to better circumstances，which leads to desirable results.

But circumstances change continuously so it is hard to always be in a good condition.

What makes good circumstances is simply luck.

Therefore luck is important to success because it puts people in a good condition.

Thus，because of these two reasons，I think hard work is necessary for success.

But hard work alone is not enough.

Luck is needed to gain success.
