지난 호에서 설명한 transitions 을 기억할 것이다.

영어 에세이에서는 sentences 와 sentences 사이를 자연스럽게 연결하는 transitions 을 굉장히 중요시 여긴다.

반드시 암기해서 본인의 에세이에 활용해보자.

그럼 thesis statement 와 hook sentences 그리고 transitions 을 기억하면서 본격적으로 본문을 어떻게 써나가야 하는지 같이 연구해보자.

본문은 총 4가지의 주된 포인트로 구성되면 된다.

1. 주장 (1~2줄) 2. 설명 (3~4줄) 3. 예시 (2~3줄) 4. 주장 다시 한 번 더 (1~2줄)

아래 예문을 주의해서 분석해보자.

주장이 1줄 그다음 설명이 5줄 그다음 예시가 4줄 마지막으로 결론이 2줄이다.

중요한 것은 에세이가 4parts 로 구성돼 있고 그 4parts 가 자연스럽게 연결돼 있다는 점이다.

예시에서 굳이 for example 이라는 단어를 쓰지 않고 일례를 바로 써도 상관이 없다.

From the very beginning，parents were and have always been there for us.

When we were unaware of how things were going around us and committed silly mistakes out of stupidity，they were the one who taught us how to think and behave.

Also，when we，looking back at my childhood，feel depressed from any hard happenings that we can not deal with proper manner，parents are the ones willing to share our burdens and try to relive us from the deep dismays.

The other day，one of my close friends and I had miscommunications and our relationship went some－what awkward.

Naturally，I turned to my mother and by letting out everything to her I felt much calmer and had a time to look back and think about what exactly went wrong.

Therefore，parents having the quality of being good listeners and mentors makes them the best teachers.

Korean ; 많은 세월 동안 선생님들은 학생들을 지도해왔다.

그분들은 단지 정보만 학생들에게 전달하는 역할만 해온 것이 아니다.

그분들이야말로 학생들의 인격을 완성시키신 분들이다.

오늘날에 선생님들도 과거에 존경받던 선생님들과 다를 게 없다.

그러므로 학생들이 선생님들을 평가하는 것은 옳지 않다고 본다.

우선 선생님들이 평가받으면 제대로 학생들을 가르칠 수가 없기 때문이다.

예를 들어 선생님들이 평가를 받는다면 수업의 질이 조금은 나아질 것이다.

그러나 가르치는 일은 지식만 전달하는 게 아니다.

학생을 꾸짖어서라도 그들을 더 나은 인간으로 만드는 일도 선생님의 몫이기 때문이다.

선생님들이 좋은 의도로 아이들을 꾸짖어도 아이들은 그 의도를 잘못 이해하고 싫어할 수가 있다.

그래서 아이들은 선생님을 평가할 때 나쁜 평가를 할 수도 있기 때문이다.

이런 결과는 선생님도 학생들도 바라는 결과는 아닐 것이다.

두 번째로 학생들이 선생님을 평가하게 된다면 그들의 관계는 바뀔 것이기 때문이다.

스승과 제자 사이의 이상적인 관계는 선생님들은 학생을 사랑으로 가르치고 학생들은 선생님들을 존경으로 대해야 한다는 것이다.

그러나 평가당하는 입장이 된다면 선생님들은 학생들을 감시관으로 볼 것이고 학생들을 진심으로 사랑하기 힘들 것이다.

마찬가지로 학생들도 선생님들을 무시할 수 있다.

학생들이 선생님을 존경하는 것은 힘든 일이 될 것이다.

사랑과 존경은 정말 중요한 덕목들이다.

제자와 스승 사이에는 정이 있고 그 정이 그들을 하나로 묶어준다.

그 정이 계속 이어지기를 기대해본다.

선생님들이 학생들로부터 평가받는다면 선생님들은 긴장하게 되고 그래서 학생들을 스스럼없이 지도할 수 없을 것이다.

또한 스승과 학생의 관계도 안 좋아질 것이다.

그러므로 학교는 학생들이 선생님을 평가하는 것을 금지해야 한다.

For centuries，teachers have taught many students and they have earned a lot of respects from people.

These teachers were more than just people who passed on information.

They were people who made imperfect humans into true humans.

Teachers of the present are the same with the teachers of the past.

Therefore，I believe that students should not evaluate their teachers.

First，teachers cannot teach students freely when they are evaluated.

For example，if students evaluate teachers，the qualities of teaching might be improved.

However，teaching does not only mean passing down information，it also means scolding students to make them into whole people.

Although teachers scold students for good purposes，students surely do not like that.

Therefore，they count the scolding into their evaluation.

This may cause teacher to leave bad students alone.

This is surely not a situation that people would want.

Second，the relationship between students and teachers may be changed.

An ideal relationship between teachers and students is that teachers treat students with love and students treat teachers with respect.

However，if students evaluate their teachers，teachers would see the students only as inspectors and would not be able to love and care their students.

Also，students may start to think that their teachers are beneath them.

It would be hard for students to respect their teachers.

Love and respect are very important between students and their teachers.

There are bonds that tie students and teachers forever.

I hope that bond will never break.

If schools ask students to evaluate their teachers，teachers would feel restrained so much so that they will not be able to teach students freely.

Also，the relationship between students and their teachers would be negatively affected.

Therefore，I think that schools should not ask students to evaluate their teachers.
