[iBT 교실] Independent Writing ④ - You can pull it off!

지난호에 공부한 서론을 기억할 것이다.

서론은 hook sentences 로 시작해서 thesis statements로 끝나는데 hook sentences에서 thesis statements 로 가는 연결을 자연스럽게 처리하도록 노력해야 한다.

다시 한번 강조하지만 서론이 여러분 에세이의 얼굴이므로 채점자, 즉 native speakers를 만족시켜야 한다.

서론은 3줄반에서 4줄반 정도만 쓰면 되므로 군더더기를 빼고 깔끔한 서론을 만드는 연습을 해보자.

writing에서 빠른 시간 내에 원하는 점수가 나오게 하는 가장 확실한 방법이 하나있다.

가장 평범하지만 거의 모든 학생들이 실천하지 않고 지나치는 중요한 포인트다.

그 방법은 의외로 간단하다.

본인이 쓴 에세이를 며칠의 기간을 두고 5번 이상 영영 사전을 보면서 스스로 고쳐보는 것이다.

에세이를 쓴 그 당시는 항상 본인의 에세이가 완벽해보이거나 틀린 것이 잘 보이지 않는다.

그러나 서툴지만 영영사전을 보면서 고쳐보자.

놀랄 만큼 많은 실력이 향상되는 것을 느낄 것이다.

이번 호의 에세이에 서론을 주목해보자.

깔끔하게 자신의 포인트를 잘 표현했다.

다음 호의 에세이는 평범한 주제를 좀 더 수준있게 쓴 에세이를 소개할 예정이다.

Grammar Points : 동사

wrong : Getting a driver's license，Paul was able to drive from Boston to Los Angeles.

Korean : 요즘은 대부분의 사람들이 대학 졸업자이다.

사람들은 다양한 이유로 대학을 다닌다.

내 생각으로는 사람들은 자신의 흥미있는 부분을 계발하려고 다닌다고 하지만 대학을 다니는 가장 중요한 이유는 졸업 후 좋은 직장을 갖기 위해서인 것 같다.

첫 번째로，대부분의 사람들은 좋은 직장을 갖기 위한 준비를 위해 대학을 다닌다.

우리 사회에서 기술은 있지만 대학 졸업장이 없는 사람은 임금이 낮거나 미래가 보장되지 않는 직업을 가지게 마련이다.

예를 들어，의대를 졸업하지 않은 사람은 의사가 될 수 없다.

그리고 돈을 많이 버는 직업은 석사 혹은 박사학위를 요구하기도 한다.

그러므로 원하는 직장을 다니려면 최소한의 학벌이 요구되고 사람들은 대학 졸업장이 필요하게 된다.

간단히 말해서 대학졸업장은 신분 상승과 부를 가질 수 있는 희망을 주기 때문이다.

두 번째，사람들은 관심있는 분야의 자기계발을 위하여 대학을 다닌다.

대학 교육을 받은 사람은 성공할 수 있는 기회를 잡을 확률이 높다.

예를 들어 대학에서 학생들은 자신의 관심분야를 학습하고 그것을 우리 생활에 어떻게 연관시키는지의 방법을 배운다.

그 결과로，학생들은 자기 삶에서 미래에 무엇을 해야 할지 알게 된다.

더욱이 대학은 학생들을 사회에 성공한 사람으로 준비시키기 위해 교수들의 지식과 강의를 제공한다.

학생들은 지식을 쌓게 되고 자신감을 가지게 된다.

또한 학생회，해외유학，부전공 선택 그리고 여태까지 주목받지 못한 과목을 전공함으로써 스스로 발전시킬 수 있게 된다.

위에서 언급한 이유들로，사람들은 취업준비 그리고 개인적인 성장을 위해서 대학을 다닌다.

내가 강조하고 싶은 것은 대학을 다니는 목적이 분명하고 최선을 다하는 학생만이 인생에서 성공할 수 있다.

English : Nowadays，most people attend college.

There are numerous reasons for attending college.

In my opinion，people attend college for personal development of their interests，but I think that the most important reason is to get a good job after graduation.

Firstly，I believe that most people attend college because they want to prepare themselves for the job market.

In our society，a person without a college degree will probably be confined to the lowest-paying and least promising job，even though he may have the necessary skills.

For example，a person who does not major in the medical faculty cannot become a doctor.

Also，many positions with high salaries require a master's or doctoral degree.

Thus，people need a college education because an undergraduate degree is only the minimum educational qualification for desirable jobs.

In brief，a college diploma provides the hope for advancement to higher status and greater wealth.

secondly，I think that many people attend college for personal development of their interests.

People with a college education may see opportunities for advancement.

For instance，in college，students learn about their field of interest and learn how to relate it to the world they live in.

Consequently，the students become certain about what they want to do with their lives.

Moreover，a college provides formal knowledge and lectures by professionals to prepare the person to be successful in the society.

They can accumulate knowledge and gain faith in their existence.

Students can also develop themselves by participating in student council，studying abroad，choosing to minor in a subject different from their major，and specializing in a field that has not gained much attention yet.

For the above - mentioned reasons，I contend that people attend college for job preparation and for personal development.

What I want to stress is that the student who apprehends the ultimate goal of college and makes an all -out effort can succeed in life.
