[iBT 교실] Independent Writing ② - Are you in catch 22?

앞으로 몇 회간 Independent Essay를 쓰는 방법에 대해서 자세히 설명하겠다.

아래 표에서 보듯이 에세이는 한 개의 서론과 두 개의 본론, 그리고 한 개의 결론이 기본 구성이다.

즉 4개의 paragraphs가 기본구조이다.

어떤 학생들은 본문에서 3개의 paragraphs가 필요하지 않느냐고 질문하는데 그렇게 되면 에세이가 필요 이상으로 길어지고 시간에 쫓기게 된다.

옆의 표는 보기는 간단해 보이지만 실제 에세이를 이런 형태로 쓰는 것은 많은 노력이 필요하다.

이번 호는 iBT 에세이의 큰 틀을 보여주었지만 다음 호부터는 서론 본론 결론을 각각 따로 자세히 공부해보겠다.

그리고 다시 한 번 밝히지만 본 칼럼의 영어 에세이는 필자의 iBT반 제자들이 쓴 에세이를 원본을 최대한 유지하면서 필자가 약간 손을 본 것이다.

물론 외국 경험이 많은 학생들의 에세이도 있지만 대부분의 에세이들은 외국 경험이 없는 학생들이 쓴 에세이므로 기죽지 말고 힘을 내 매주 분발하기 바란다.

그럼 grammar points를 공부하고 완벽하게 이해한 다음 에세이를 써보자.

항상 에세이를 쓸 때 다음 세 가지를 유념하자.

첫째，위에서 공부한 <영어 에세이 틀을 유지>하고，둘째，매주 나가는 <문법 포인트>를 본인의 에세이에 활용하기，셋째，만점 에세이의 <유용한 표현>을 항상 암기하기.

Korean ; 사람들은 성공적인 삶을 살고 있는 사람들에 대해 부러워하거나 심지어 질투를 하기도 한다.

그렇게 생각하는 사람들은 다른 사람의 성공에서 <행운이 중요한 역할을 했다고 믿는다.>

그러나 나는 동의하지 않는다. 행운은 인생에서 어떤 중요한 일을 성취하는데 <연관이 없다고 생각한다.>

나는 열심히 일하는 것이 성공과 밀접한 관계가 있다고 믿는다.

첫 번째，나는 행운을 믿지 않기 때문이다.

사람들이 행운이라고 부르는 것은 누구에게나 일어날 수 있는 일반적인 상황을 <성공의 주춧돌>로 바꾸는 그 사람의 능력 때문이다.

모든 사람은 같은 기회가 주어지나，많은 사람들이 기회를 잡을 준비가 되어 있지 않으므로 그 <기회를 놓친다>.

예를 들어 Isaac Newton은 <만유인력의 법칙>을 그가 사과가 땅바닥에 떨어지는 것을 본 행운 때문에 발견한 것이 아니라 사과가 땅에 떨어지는 것을 보고 그것에 대해 의구심을 가지고, 그리고 그 사건을 그의 삶에서 가장 중요한 기회로 만들었기 때문이다.

Newton의 예에서 보듯이，행운이란 존재하지 않고 기회가 왔을 때 열심히 일하는 것과 준비성이 중요할 뿐이다.

두 번째，열심히 일한 결과로 얻은 성과만이 성취감을 준다.

쉽게 얻은 것은 쉽게 잃는다고 사람들은 말한다.

그러므로 <우연히> 획득한 <성취는> 가치가 없을 뿐만 아니라 쉽게 잊혀진다.

성공의 진짜 의미는 물질적인 것이 아니라 우리가 인생에서 진실로 원하는 것을 획득해 가는 과정으로 정의될 수 있다.

예를 들어 <부동산을> 사고파는 행위로 부를 축적한 사람들을 우리는 성공한 사람들이라 부르지 않는다.

왜냐하면 그들은 열심히 일을 했다기보다 행운이 따랐기 때문이다.

그러므로 성공적인 삶은 부지런함과 열심히 노력한 결실이지 행운 때문은 아니다.

결론적으로 성공이 행운과 전혀 무관하다고 나는 주장한다.

성공이라는 것은 우리가 열심히 일한 다음 획득하는 것이다.

그 근거는 행운이라는 자체가 존재하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 열심히 일한 다음 성취하는 것만이 <가치>가 있기 때문이다.

English ; Most people envy or even jealous about people who lead a successful life.

Many of these people believe that <iuck has played a key role> in other people's success.

However，I do not agree with them.

Rather，I believe that luck <has nothing to do with>achieving some important accomplishments in life.

Instead，I believe that hard work is deeply related to success.

Firstly，I do not believe in luck.

I believe that what people call "luck" is nothing more than a person's ability to change an ordinary incident into<a stepping stone for success>.

All people are given the same opportunities，but many people <let their chances fly away> just because they are not ready<to jump at them>.

For example，Isaac Newton discovered <universal gravitation> not because he was lucky enough to see an apple falling down to the ground，but because he saw it，questioned it，and <made this simple occurrence into the most important chance> in his life.

As we can see from Newton's example，there is no such thing as luck，but only hardworking and preparing for the chance to come.

Secondly，only achievements that are achieved as the results of hard work are valuable.

Many people say that things that are easily gained are easily lost.

Thus，<accomplishments> are easily lost and valueless if they are achieved just <by chance>.

The real meaning of success is not in something that is material but it is defined in the process of attaining what we really are truly eager to get.

For example，most people do not agree that people who earn money by buying and selling <real-estate> are not successful because it is not something achieved but rather the result of good fortune.

Therefore，successful lives are the results of hardworking and diligent living not luck.

In conclusion，I insist that luck is not related to success.

Rather, success is what we achieve from hard work.

This is because I think that there is nothing such as luck，and because I believe that only achievements that we accomplish after hardworking is <worthy>.
