해리 포터와 연금술, 미신일까 과학일까?

조앤 K 롤링의 《해리 포터》 시리즈는 1997년 출간된 이후 20년간 세계 67개의 언어로 총 4억5000만 부가 팔렸다. 시리즈물 사상 세계 최대의 베스트셀러다. 등장인물이나 에피소드, 상황 설정 등은 단순히 작가가 공상해서 만든 게 아니다. 영국에서 내려오는 전설, 북유럽 신화와 고대·중세의 연금술, 고딕소설, 모험담 등이 작품에 두루 녹아 있다. 《해리 포터》 시리즈를 이해하려면 연금술을 빼놓을 수 없다. 1편 부제인 ‘현자의 돌(마법사의 돌)’은 연금술의 상징과도 같기 때문이다. 현자의 돌이란 용어는 4세기에 그리스 테베의 조시모스가 처음 언급한 것으로 전해진다. 그렇다면 대체 연금술은 무엇이고 현자의 돌은 또 뭘까?연금술은 근대과학이 정립되기 이전 단계의 과학과 철학적 시도를 총칭하는 것이다. BC 2000년께 고대 이집트에서 불과 금속을 다룬 ‘불의 사제’가 그 유래다. 이들의 솜씨는 파라오 투탕카멘의 황금 마스크 같은 화려한 이집트 장식물에서 보듯 수준이 대단히 높았다. 이집트의 연금술은 메소포타미아와 그리스로 전파되었다. 고대 연금술사들은 기술의 신인 이집트의 토트와 그리스의 헤르메스를 숭배했다. 연금술은 6세기 동로마제국을 거쳐 8세기 이슬람권에 전해졌다. 이슬람의 오랜 지배를 받은 스페인과 시칠리아, 십자군원정 등을 통해 연금술은 중세 유럽에도 전파됐다.연금술은 특히 아랍에서 비약적으로 발달했다. 우마이야 왕조 때 이슬람권 최초의 연금술사로 꼽히는 칼리드 왕자는 연금술 연구를 위해 왕위조차 거부했을 만큼 아랍은 연금술에 관심이 많았다. 연금술은 화금석, 즉 현자의 돌을 찾는 과정이었다. 명칭은 돌이지만 실제로 돌은 아
